The room was dimmed with dark blue shades that covered the window on both sides.  Sunlight still bled through the two shades, only reaching the small part of the grey blue carpet, therefore, keeping the rest of the medium sized room dark and undisturbed.   The area stayed completely silent except for the low snoring that came from the slowly rising and falling sheets and blankets that layered the bed.  The dark blue and grey blanket and sheets tangled with silver-blue hair that covered the pillows and hung off the bedside in long straight strands.  His arm and leg swayed lazily off the side as well, while his face was turned, shrouded by the long strands of hair.

His hand only flinched slightly from the sound of the wind hitting tall trees, sending the branches into the window. Once the room was completely silent, the sudden ear piercing beeping came from the side of his bed.  The young adult didn’t respond to the first two beeps, but after the fifth and most aggravating sixth beep, his arm that was closest to the small device on his nightstand rose slowly over it then came down heavily on the little machine, crushing it completely.  The annoying beeps were instantly silenced by the sudden crunch of metal, glass, and plastic.  The small clock was now reduced to a pile of smashed material as he lazily moved his fist off the bedside drawer then moaned quietly retracting his arm back under the blankets and sheets that hung over him.  His snoring only continued for a second until a small dark-skinned boy busted the door open without warning.

He had his dark brown hair in small twists and had eyes that were large and bright blue, matching the wide smile he wore across his face.  He wore a white and grey t shirt that was obviously a hand-me down from the sleeping silver haired boy in the bed.  His pants were slightly baggy, but were held up by a silver and black belt that was seen only where his shirt was unevenly tucked.  Smiling widely the little boy walked into the room, leaving the door wide open.

“Awesome! You’re awake!” he shouted standing excitedly in the doorway.

“No I’m not,” Kyle answered back with a groggy but slightly steady voice.

The little boy didn’t bother to acknowledge his warning and instead turned back to the hallway behind him.

“Hey mom! Kyle’s awake!”

“No he’s not!” he stated even louder but in the same monotone voice as before.
Too excited to even feel a sense of danger, he energetically ran to the side of his bed, climbing up and sitting on his back without hesitation.  He laughed hearing the young man protest while he climbed, grunt from the sudden weight that collected on his back, and then let out a sigh of defeat into his pillow.

“Come on Kyle, I know you’re not sleeping,” the little boy coaxed shoving his shoulders.

“No you don’t,” he responded, burying his face deeper in the pillow.

“Oh yeah I do, besides, you are talking to me so you have to admit that you’re at the least awake.”

“No I don’t Alexander, now get off,” He responded, knocking the smaller boy back on the floor with a light shift to his side.  Alexander fell on his back hitting the grey carpet and rolled back onto his knees using the momentum to his advantage.  Feeling ignored, he goes back to the side of the bed frowning at the Kyle who didn’t bother to raise his head from the pillow.

“Oh come on Kyle, I’ve been waiting for you to come home so we could hang out and now you’re just ignoring me.  That’s not fair,” he whined while he tried to hopelessly turn Kyle’s body to face him.  Not acknowledging the small shoves of the little boy, he merely turned his head and body away from him.

“I’m not ignoring you, I’m sleeping.  Now go away before-“

“Good morning Kyle.  Good to see you up before one in the afternoon.”

He sighed loudly, feeling defeated by the sound of her voice.  He rolled over moving the blankets and sheets to the opposite side of the bed then sat up facing the tall middle aged woman who stood just outside the doorway.  She was wearing a long white button-up business shirt that she rolled up the sleeves on so they wouldn’t get in her way.  Her hair was now tied back with a few messy strands coming out the front, which only dangled in front of her ears.  She wore comfortable grey slacks that matched her white slip on shoes and shirt.  She obviously had been taking care of some chores by the way she carried a small basket of clothes in one arm, already folded.

“Good morning Mrs. J.  How are you?” he asked with grogginess and exhaustion coating the beginning of the sentence.  She had to stop herself from letting out a chuckle by the way he answered her with such defeat.

“Oh I’m fine. I do hope however,” she responded looking at the pile of crushed plastic and mangled wires that rested on his nightstand.

“That you replace that alarm clock, I don’t plan on buying you anymore since you keep breaking them.”

Kyle turned his head to the small table next to his bed then nodded in the direction her voice was coming from, letting his hair messily cover half of his face.
“Yes mam, anything else?”

She smiled adjusting the basket of clothes under her arm.
“Yes, could you please take out the garbage out for me?  Then when you’re done with that you can come eat.  I made breakfast already and you’re the only one that hasn’t eaten yet.”

“Yes mam.”

“Thank you sweetie.”

“No problem.”

She then turned to the hall and walked away carrying the basket with her.  Once her footsteps could not be heard, Kyle turned his body to the side of his bed, letting his feet touch the floor.  He was wearing long grey sweat pants and black socks, matching the black sleeveless undershirt that wrinkled when he slumped over, resting his arms on his knees.  His left arm was completely visible now, revealing the continuous pattern of burns covering it.  They stretched from the beginning of his fingers, to the side of his neck and torso, reaching almost to the middle of his back. Only a small number of people had seen it and he wanted to keep it that way.

He scratched his head lazily with his scarred hand, not paying any attention to the smiling boy who not only stared at him, but also looked as if he would explode from the slightest bit of motion.

“Alright kid, out of my room, I need to get dressed,” he stated, picking up Alexander by his shirt without giving him the slightest bit of eye contact.  Dangling just above the floor, the little boy tried to keep from showing his amusement and began to try fighting his grip.

“Hey! I’m no kid! I’m 11 this year! Which means in two years I’m gonna be-“

“Just as short?”

Alexander gave him a serious look while Kyle only scoffed at it.
“NO, I’m gonna be 13, which means I’ll be old enough to enroll into the DX Academy, like you! Then I can go on missions, fight crime, and train with dragons! It’ll be AWESOME!”

Kyle chuckled under his breath and dropped the little boy onto the floor.
“Train with dragons huh?  Don’t get your hopes up on that one kid.  They aren't the easiest to find, let alone the nicest.”

Alexander then sat up staring at him while he stayed on the floor. His eyes were filled with slight disappointment and eagerness.

“But you got to train with them!  Come on! You must know where they are!  It’s been my dream to actually meet one!  I've read every book ever written on dragons and know what they eat, what they like, how they like to sleep, what is poisonous, the different attributes of certain scale types-“

“Alright, alright I get it.” Kyle interrupted him, covering the little boy’s mouth with his hand.

“Can you just get out of my room? I need to get dressed.”

The little boy nodded groaning into his palm and rolling his eyes.  Feeling his nods, he then removed his hand and stood from his bed while Alexander exited the room, slamming the door behind him.  Hearing how disappointed he was made Kyle, to his surprised, a bit uneasy.  Ever since Alexander was able to make coherent sentences, he had fallen in love with the dragon species.  He often spent days reading several books on the history and anatomy alone.  So one could only imagine the envy he felt when hearing that Kyle of all people had lived and trained with a dragon clan for two years.  Though he would never show it, he always felt somewhat sad for him.  Perhaps one day he would make it up to him.  He occasionally thought this, but never had the time to accomplish anything.

“One day Alex, one day,” he spoke under his breath.

He slowly walked to a bedside drawer and felt around the front, only stopping when he had grazed the handle with his fingers.  He calmly pulled it open, taking out a pair of  dark and thin sunglasses then moving the messy strands of hair from his eyes and placing them on.  Pressing a small button twice on the frames, the glass lenses blinked a low dark blue color as a digital line swept across them.  After a half a second of low humming, the glasses went completely black and he looked up facing the wall then turned around to look at the room.  He stood there for a moment, just glancing around until he stopped at the pile of rubble on his nightstand.  He stared at it then sighed with a slight chuckle under his breath.

“So that’s what she meant… Heck, I wasn’t even paying attention.”

He walked over to the mess and picked up a few small shards, then looked down at a short trail of grey plastic pieces that lead to his blanket hanging off the bed almost completely.  He then turned back to the shards with a look of disbelief.
“Geez, I thought it was just cracked, I wasn’t trying to obliterate it,” he commented to himself.

Placing the pieces back on the nightstand, he walked to the dresser on the other side of the room and begun getting ready for the day ahead.
